The importance of being well-bundled up
First of all, we must remember that babies lose a lot of heat during the first few months of life. Many times we don't know how to dress them, and we often have doubts about how many layers of clothes to put on them. Did you know that, as a general rule, they need one additional layer than what we wear? Obviously, the climate will require more or fewer clothes, but generally, one extra layer will be most appropriate.
How to tell if your baby is cold at night?
That said, there's no need to worry too much: if your little one is cold at night, they'll let you know! If they're not bundled up enough, their crying will give you a clue that something is wrong.
If you have doubts and want to put your mind at ease, we recommend touching their chest, tummy, neck, and especially their nape: if it's warm, there's nothing to worry about, but if it's cold, it's time to add another layer! Additionally, it's also a good idea to check their cheeks: if they're rosy, it's very likely they are too warm.
How to dress them for sleep?
As we mentioned before, depending on the weather and the season, we will dress them differently. However, it's important that the materials are appropriate; this rule applies any time of year! Also, it's better to dress them in several thin layers than one too thick; it will be easier to get it right!
To prevent them from uncovering and ensure a good temperature, nothing beats our sleeping bags and 4-season sleeping bags: this way, they won't uncover themselves and there's no risk of the sheet ending up on their face: perfect safety and temperature!
The role of TOG
It's important to keep our little ones warm, but we need to be logical: if it's very hot, we shouldn't put more layers on them than necessary, it's also not good for them to overheat! Dress them in light, breathable materials, that's the best!
TOG defines the thermal resistance of garments. At Petite Marmotte, we have sleeping bags and sleepsuits available in different TOGs. They can be used all year round and in rooms with different temperatures!
For warm temperatures, like summer, it's best to use TOG 0.5. These are designed for rooms at 23 degrees Celsius and above. You can use it with pyjamas or a bodysuit underneath, or simply put on the sleeping bag for a "light sheet" effect. A perfect option for summer nights!
During the mid-seasons, such as spring or autumn, use TOG 1.5. These are designed so your baby won't uncover themselves at night, get cold, and wake up. Perfect for temperatures between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius. You'll sleep peacefully, knowing they'll always have the ideal temperature!
For the colder winter months, we can opt for warmer garments. Use TOG 2.5. This ensures they sleep warmly all night without the risk of suffocation. Designed for rooms between 17 and 20 degrees Celsius.
