How much sleep does a baby need?

¿Cúanto necesita dormir un bebé? Petite Marmotte

When you have your first child, one of the main concerns we parents have is knowing if our baby is sleeping properly. Since this raises many questions, I have decided to write a small guide with the hours of sleep a baby should have depending on their age.

However, every child is different and has different needs. I will try to speak in general terms, but don't worry if your child doesn't meet these guidelines.

cuántas horas necesita dormir un bebé

From 0 to 2 months: 16-20 hours a day sleeping. This is a time of many changes for the baby and they need many hours of sleep; they will be almost all day eating-sleeping-eating-sleeping. And they still don't differentiate between day and night.

From 2 to 3 months: they will need to sleep 15 to 18 hours. Little by little, you will notice that your baby wants to be awake longer, they pay attention to things, they show their first smiles...

From 3 to 6 months: 14 to 16 hours, and these should be divided into about 8 hours at night and 2 or 3 naps during the day. From the third month is when parents begin to notice changes in our baby, they can already sleep a few hours straight at night and extend feedings. In addition, from this age, babies begin to differentiate between day and night.

From 6 months onwards: 13 to 15 hours, 11 hours during the night and 2 naps during the day (morning and afternoon). Many suggest that from this age the baby should sleep in their own room, but parents should make that decision based on their personal situation.

From 6 months until one year, the baby will learn sleep habits and routines. A relaxing bath, dinner, and a story before bed always help to fall asleep.

And as their first birthday approaches, your baby will be delighted with the new skills they've learned; they'll be restless and won't want to miss anything happening around them... This might make it harder to get your baby to sleep, but you'll just need patience, calm, and lots of cuddles :)

I hope this small guide is helpful!
