Choosing the first newborn sleeping bag or sleep sack can raise many questions. When a baby arrives, we want them to sleep safely, comfortably, and at the right temperature, but it's hard to choose with so many options available today.
A good baby sleeping bag not only replaces traditional blankets but also becomes a key piece for promoting safe and peaceful rest from the first days of life.
In this post, we explain everything you need to know to correctly choose among the different baby sleeping bags, avoiding common mistakes and always prioritizing safety.

Why use a sleeping bag instead of blankets?
During the first months, sleep safety is fundamental. Loose blankets can end up covering the baby's face, which significantly increases the risk of suffocation.
The baby sleeping bag keeps the body warm without the need to add loose textiles to the crib. This offers several advantages:
- Increased safety during the night
- Constant temperature
- Freedom of movement without uncovering
- Fewer awakenings and better sleep quality
That's why more and more pediatricians recommend replacing blankets with baby sleeping bags specially designed for newborns.

Key factors for choosing the right sleeping bag
Organic fabrics and certified materials
The Oeko-Tex certificate guarantees the product is free of harmful substances, providing total safety for your baby.
Safe design
The sleeping bag should fit snugly at the shoulders and chest, without being too wide, as the baby could otherwise slip inside.
Freedom of movement
Although the sleeping bag is narrow at the top, the design at the leg area should be wide enough for the baby to kick and move freely.
Protected front zipper
For quick and easy diaper access and to prevent chafing on the baby's skin.
Other things to consider when choosing a newborn sleeping bag
Room temperature
Sleeping in winter is not the same as in summer. The ideal temperature for a baby's rest is between 18 °C and 21 °C. Choose their sleeping bag based on this.
Season of the year
There are lightweight models for summer and more padded ones for winter.
Choosing correctly among the different baby sleeping bags will prevent the baby from getting cold or hot during the night.

What is TOG and how to choose it correctly
The TOG is a measure that indicates the thermal insulation level of a fabric. The higher the TOG, the warmer the garment.
At Petite Marmotte, we test garments in an independent laboratory to determine the temperatures they are suitable for, and we have 3 different TOGs:
- ☀️0.5 TOG (Summer) → For rooms at 24 °C and above
- ☁️1.5 TOG (Mid-season) → Between 21 °C and 24 °C
- ⛄2.5 TOG (Winter) → Between 17 °C and 21 °C
One of the most common mistakes is over-dressing the baby, as it carries a risk of overheating. A good baby sleeping bag should keep them warm, but without causing sweating or excessive heat.
How to know what size sleeping bag your newborn needs
Size is essential for your baby's safety.
A newborn sleeping bag should never be too large, as the baby could slip inside.
To choose correctly:
- Check the manufacturer's recommended height
- Ensure the neck fits snugly
- The shoulders should not allow the head to go inside
At Petite Marmotte, we have two sleeping bag sizes available: 0-6 months and 6-18 months.
